A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE SCULPTURE PILLAR OF FIRE BY PAUL PENNY INTO THE TOWN’S PUBLIC ART COLLECTION (2009-02-23/R-3)

WHEREAS, the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission was established in 1992 with the purpose of promoting public appreciation of the arts; and

WHEREAS, the SculptureVisions Program of the Public Arts Commission, which places temporary pieces of sculpture in the Chapel Hill area is one such program to promote public art; and

WHEREAS, through the SculptureVisions Program of the Public Arts Commission, the artwork Pillar of Fire , by Paul Penny was placed in the traffic island on Boundary and North Streets in April 2006; and

WHEREAS, the Coker Woods Neighborhoods Association entered into an agreement with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission to retain the artwork at that location by donating funds on a yearly basis to the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission to pay the artist; and

WHEREAS, the full amount owed to the artist has been paid and the artwork title has been transferred to the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission; and

WHEREAS, the Public Arts Commission desires to offer as a gift to the Town’s Permanent Art Collection the sculpture Pillar of Fire by Paul Penny;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the sculpture Pillar of Fire by Paul Penny be accepted into the Town’s Permanent Art Collection.
