Title of Agenda Item: Report on Community Gardens Initiative
Background: The attached staff memorandum includes background information on a proposed community garden project for a portion of the Town-owned Carolina Sport Art property located on Homestead Road in Chapel Hill. Town staff from the Parks & Recreation Department and Office of Sustainability will continue to work with the Go! Chapel Hill Active Living by Design Committee and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Campus Y Homeless Outreach Poverty Eradication (HOPE) organization to assist with the establishment of the proposed community garden project.
Fiscal Note: We do not anticipate any significant fiscal impact from the proposed community garden project. The Parks & Recreation Department is in a position to provide assistance with basic site preparation. Campus Y will be responsible for costs associated with the design, infrastructure, development, and management of the community garden.
Staff Recommendation(s): That the Council receive the attached staff report and corresponding documents on a community gardens initiative.
