Title of Agenda Item:
Schedule Public Forum on Google Ultra-High Speed Internet. (R-3) Council Goal 4: Maintain and Improve Community Facilities and Services. |

Background:
On February 10, 2010, Google Inc. announced plans to launch an experiment to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Google is asking interested municipalities to provide information about their communities through a Request for Information (RFI), which Google will use to determine where it will build its network. An inter jurisdictional team has been formed among Chapel Hill, Carrboro and UNC-Chapel Hill to prepare the Request for Information, which is due on March 26, 2010. The attached resolution would schedule a Public Forum for March 15, 2010, to receive public comment regarding community interest in the fiber optic trial and specifically, how residents would use an ultra-high speed Internet network. Comments from the Public Forum will be forwarded to the inter jurisdictional team that is preparing the Request for Information application. |
