The attached resolution would authorize the acceptance of a grant recently approved for the Police Department by the Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The attached budget ordinance would establish a project account for the grant.

GRANT SUMMARY

The Bulletproof Vest Program is a Department of Justice program which assists states and units of local government in obtaining funds to purchase ballistic vests for law enforcement officers.  The program requires that each jurisdiction pay for one half of the cost of each qualifying vest.  The Police Department’s operations budget has an allocation to purchase the vests. The grant funds would pay for the remainder of the cost. The department has been approved to receive up to $16,282.00 for reimbursement of eligible purchases.  Acceptance of these funds would help to defray the cost of purchasing new vests and would allow the department to make improvements in the quality of vests that it purchases.
