MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Mayor and Town Council

FROM:            Council Naming Committee

(Council Members Flicka Bateman, Bill Strom, and Edith Wiggins)

SUBJECT:       Report on Naming Opportunities for Town Facilities

DATE:             September 22, 2003

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Council with recommendations from the Council Naming Committee regarding the naming of three Town facilities.

In a separate memorandum and resolution on tonight’s agenda, the Council will consider revised policies and procedures for the Council Naming Committee.

BACKGROUND

The current procedures for naming facilities state that the Committee will develop recommendations, present these to the Council, and invite public comment on these recommendations for at least one month.  A public forum to receive comments is optional.  This is the public comment process used in both the current and the proposed Naming Committee policies.

DISCUSSION

The Naming Committee has considered three naming opportunities for various Town facilities and offers these recommendations to the Council.  The Committee will provide this information to area media to make the public aware of our recommendations.  In accordance with the Committee’s policies and procedures, these recommendations could be considered at the Council’s October 27 regular business meeting.

We offer the following names and locations for the Council’s consideration:

CONCLUSION

We recommend that the Council receive and refer these names for consideration at the October 27, 2003, Council meeting.  We will provide this list of names to the media and invite public comment at that meeting.
