SUBJECT: Recommendations for Town Facility Naming Opportunities

The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Council with recommendations from the Council Naming Committee regarding the naming of three Town facilities.
Adoption of the attached resolution will approve the Committee’s recommendations.
On September 22, the Council received the attached memorandum from the Council Naming Committee, with recommendations for naming three Town facilities (Attachment 1). On the same evening, the Council approved revised policies and procedures for the Naming Committee to follow.
The adopted policy stipulates that the public be invited to comment on these recommendations for at least one month. In accordance with policy, we sent the attached communication to The Chapel Hill News and The Chapel Hill Herald on September 25, 2003. The Council also may receive public comment on this item at tonight’s meeting.
The Naming Committee has considered three naming opportunities for various Town facilities and offers these recommendations to the Council.
We offer the following names and locations for the Council’s consideration:
We have received no other public comment on these naming recommendations since September 22.
We recommend that the Council adopt the attached resolution, approving the recommendations of the Naming Committee.
A RESOLUTION ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE COUNCIL NAMING COMMITTEE FOR THE NAMING OF THREE TOWN FACILITIES (2003-10-27/R-4)
WHEREAS, the Council’s Naming Committee has made recommendations regarding the naming of Town facilities; and
WHEREAS, the Council has received appropriate public comment regarding the naming of these facilities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council hereby:

SUBJECT: Report on Naming Opportunities for Town Facilities
DATE: September 22, 2003
The purpose of this memorandum is to provide the Council with recommendations from the Council Naming Committee regarding the naming of three Town facilities.
In a separate memorandum and resolution on tonight’s agenda, the Council will consider revised policies and procedures for the Council Naming Committee.
The current procedures for naming facilities state that the Committee will develop recommendations, present these to the Council, and invite public comment on these recommendations for at least one month. A public forum to receive comments is optional. This is the public comment process used in both the current and the proposed Naming Committee policies.
The Naming Committee has considered three naming opportunities for various Town facilities and offers these recommendations to the Council. The Committee will provide this information to area media to make the public aware of our recommendations. In accordance with the Committee’s policies and procedures, these recommendations could be considered at the Council’s October 27 regular business meeting.
We offer the following names and locations for the Council’s consideration:
CONCLUSION
We recommend that the Council receive and refer these names for consideration at the October 27, 2003, Council meeting. We will provide this list of names to the media and invite public comment at that meeting.
CHAPEL HILL – At its regular meeting on October 27, 2003, the Chapel Hill Town Council will consider recommendations from the Council’s Naming Committee regarding the naming of three Town facilities.
The following recommendations will be considered:
The Council received the Naming Committee’s recommendations on September 22 and agreed to hold these recommendations open for a period of one month to allow time for public comment.
Public comment about these recommendations will be included as part of the Council record. Comments may also be sent to: Mayor and Town Council, 306 N. Columbia St., Chapel Hill, NC 27516. Comments may also be faxed to: (919) 969-2063, or sent by email to [email protected].
The October 27 meeting will take place at the regular meeting time of 7 p.m., in the Council Chamber of Chapel Hill Town Hall, 306 N. Columbia Street.
