AGENDA #10a

MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Mayor and Town Council

FROM:            Joyce A. Smith, Town Clerk

SUBJECT:       Appointments to the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery Task Force

DATE:             January 12, 2004

Tonight, the Council may make appointments for up to five seats on the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery Task Force.

The Council’s resolution of November 10, 2003, stated that the Task Force shall consist of 10-12 members, with up to six appointed by the Town, and up to six appointed by the University.  The resolution also determined that of the Town’s six seats that one shall be a member of the Gimghoul neighborhood, and one shall be a member of the Town Council.  The Council determined that Dorothy Verkerk would serve as its representative, leaving five remaining vacancies, which the Council may appoint tonight.

Over the last week, the Clerk’s Office has received several phone calls and requests for applications to this Task Force.  We expect to receive up to five more applications in the next week.  The Council may choose to appoint some members of the Task Force this evening, and hold some seats vacant in expectation of receipt of additional applications.  However, the deadline for receipt of applications for this Task Force was advertised as 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6.

Copies of the applications received to date and ballots are attached.

Listed below are the six Task Force members chosen by the University:

Bruce Runberg, Chair and Associate Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction

John Sanders, Professor Emeritus, School of Government

Bland Simpson, Associate Professor, Creative Writing Program
