To the Chapel Hill Town Council:
We, residents of the Cedar Hills neighborhood, request that
the Town of Chapel Hill implement traffic-calming measures on our streets (Cedar
Hills Drive, Silo Drive, and Cedar Hills Circle). Our neighborhood is
overused as a
"cut-through" from Airport Road via Piney Mountain Road to Weaver
Dairy
Road. This problem will be aggravated by the development of the Horace
Williams tract since Piney Mountain/Cedar Hills will be an attractive
"cut-through" for vehicles traveling back and forth from there to the
northeastern side of Chapel Hill.
People currently drive on our roads well above the posted
speed limit of 25
MPH, thus posing serious danger to pedestrians and school children.
Students cutting through our neighborhood to get to East Chapel Hill High
School are particularly problematic.
Once or twice a year the Chapel Hill Police Department
assigns an officer to attempt to catch speeders and stop-sign runners in our
neighborhood. We appreciate their effort. However, we believe that
traffic calming measures will provide a more effective, longer-term solution to
the problem of speeding and
reckless driving through our neighborhood.
