AGENDA #7a

BUDGET WORKING PAPER

TO:                  W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

FROM:            Kay Johnson, Interim Finance Director

SUBJECT:       Inter-Faith Council’s Request for 2004-05 Funding

DATE:             April 28, 2004

This working paper provides information on the Inter-Faith Council’s request for $30,000 in additional funding in fiscal year 2004-05.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

In a letter dated March 12, 2004, addressed to the Mayor and the Town Council, the Inter-Faith Council detailed the financial hardships it has experienced over the past year because of reduced donations and reduced federal funding.  The Inter-Faith Council’s financial constraints are worsened by the required move from the Old Municipal Building.  Upon review of their preliminary budget, the Inter-Faith Council remains concerned about their future financial stability.  The Inter-Faith Council is requesting an additional $30,000 in funding for fiscal year 2004-05.

When the Town Council considered the 2003-04 budget, they responded to the Inter-Faith Council’s request for one-time funding by including an extra $30,000 for the Inter-Faith Council in the 2003-04 budget.  Human services throughout the Town are experiencing difficult economic circumstances because of increased demand and reduced funding.  We believe that this request for funding should be considered along with other human service requests by the Human Services Advisory Board.

RECOMMENDATION

We recommend that the Council refer this request to the Human Services Advisory Board.
