SUBJECT: Interim Status Report in Response to a Petition Requesting Installation of Traffic Signal at the Intersection of Sage Road and Erwin Road

The following information provides a status report in response to a petition from Ms. Alice C. De Bellis requesting the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Sage Road and Erwin Road.
At its March 22, 2004 meeting, the Town Council received a staff report in response to a petition from Ms. De Bellis, 104 Saddle Ridge Road, requesting that a traffic signal be installed at the intersection of Sage Road and Erwin Road. Please see the area map presented in Attachment #1. In her petition, Ms. De Bellis expressed concerns about traffic safety for drivers making left turns from Sage Road onto Erwin Road. The Town Council adopted a resolution requesting that the State install a traffic signal at this intersection, as requested by the petitioner.
The Council also requested that we confirm with the State that the traffic signal, if approved, would include pedestrian amenities such as crosswalks and pedestrian signal heads.
We forwarded the Council resolution to the North Carolina Department of Transportation and requested confirmation that an investigation would be undertaken and that any traffic signal improvements that were approved would include crosswalks and signals for pedestrians as a part of the improvement project.
Subsequently, we received a response dated April 6, 2004 from the Department of Transportation indicating that they would complete a traffic signal investigation at the requested location within four to six weeks. We also received an e-mail response from the Department of Transportation confirming that pedestrian amenities would be recommended if a traffic signal were found to be warranted at the intersection of Sage Road and Erwin Road. Please see Attachment #2 for the State’s correspondence on this matter.
CONCLUSION
We will provide a follow-up report to the Council regarding the Department of Transportation’s findings and recommendations upon completion of the traffic signal investigation at the intersection of Sage Road and Erwin Road.
