AGENDA #8a(1)
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: Jim Ward, Council Member
SUBJECT: Support for Car Free Day
DATE: September 13, 2004
I request that the Council authorize a performance agreement with The Village Project to support part of the costs of Car Free Day. Adoption of the attached resolution would authorize use of $500 from the Council’s contingency account for this purpose.
The Council already has stated its support of Car Free Day and the Mayor has proclaimed that September 2 2, 2004, is Car Free Day; Chapel Hill Transit will aid in the event by providing fare free transit, as it does everyday; town employees are being encouraged to participate; and residents who wish to pledge their participation may enter a drawing for a prize by registering at Town Hall (materials are on the first floor at the entrance) or on-line at www.gocarfree.com.
The Council’s support of Car Free Day will encourage greater participation and help reduce air pollution, promote personal health from walking, and lead to increased social interaction with neighbors, friends and local businesses.
I ask that the Council adopt the following resolution.
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING PERFORMANCE AGREEMENT IN SUPPORT OF CAR FREE DAY (2004-09-13/R-6)
BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Council hereby authorizes the Town Manager to negotiate and execute a performance agreement with The Village Project to support part of the costs of Car Free Day; and, that the Council authorizes the use of $500 from the Council’s contingency account for this purpose.
This the 13th day of September, 2004.
