FROM:            W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

SUBJECT:       Acceptance of a Grant for the Police Department

DATE:             June 24, 2002

The attached resolution would authorize the acceptance of a grant from the Governor’s Crime Commission.  The grant would provide funding for the Police Department to electronically share criminal information with other law enforcement agencies.  The grant amount is $15,497 over two years.

Governor’s Crime Commission Grant

The grant will fund the project “Criminal Information Sharing” which will provide the police department the ability to share criminal information (arrest records, mug shots,  and suspect information) with neighboring law enforcement agencies, through an internet-based software application.

The goals of “Criminal Information Sharing” are to

·          Increase the number of criminal cases cleared by arrest, and

·          Increase inter-agency coordination by participating in a system that would allow the immediate sharing of information among law enforcement agencies.

The funding would begin July 1, 2002, and would be dispersed over a two years.  The grant would provide $10,631 the first year and $4,866 the second year.  A twenty-five percent match is required from the Town, $3,544 the first year and $1,622 the second year.  The matching funds are included in the Police Department’s budget.
