RECOMMENDED PROJECT 3 - Installation of custom street and pedestrian lighting in sections where Streetscape has been completed

This project would install custom street and pedestrian lighting on the south side of the 500 and 600 blocks of West Franklin Street from Roberson Street to Merritt Mill Road.  In this section other Streetscape improvements have already been completed and the underground duct banks needed to service the new light fixtures are currently in place. Adjacent land uses in this section include Jiffy Lube, the Chapel Hill News offices, the Orange County Skills Development Center and Visitors Bureau.

The Downtown Streetscape Lighting Plan for this 550-foot section calls for three pedestrian light poles, three streetlight-pedestrian light combinations, and four mast arm traffic signal poles at the intersection of West Franklin and Graham Streets between the 500 and 600 blocks. The estimated cost for the recommended lighting improvements is approximately $60,000. The estimated cost to upgrade the traffic signal poles is approximately $100,000. Staff recommends that mast arm poles be considered as a future Streetscape project when additional funding becomes available.
