SUBJECT: Ordinance Allocating Funds for Dedication of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
DATE: April 11, 2005
Enactment of the following ordinance would allocate $20,000 from fund balance to pay for the events and publicity associated with the dedication of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard on May 8, 2005. The Observances Committee is planning a Town-wide celebration featuring presentations and speeches by community leaders and special guests, as well as music, entertainment and food at Town Hall, 306 N. Columbia Street, and Hargraves Center, 216 N. Roberson Street.
DISCUSSION
On December 6, 2004, the Council accepted the primary recommendation from the Special Committee to Consider Renaming Airport Road to change the name of Airport Road to “Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.” with a separate sign mounted underneath with the designation “Historic Airport Road.”
On January 10, 2005, the Council authorized the formation of an Observances Committee to organize a road name change celebration. The Council expressed its desire to recognize and celebrate the renaming of the road on May 8, 2005, in an appropriate fashion that would involve the community. The Observances Committee is formed and is currently planning celebratory community events.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The Town Manager recommends that the Council enact the attached budget ordinance to allocate $20,000 for the dedication ceremonies to mark the name change of Airport Road to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.
AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND “THE ORDINANCE CONCERNING APPROPRIATIONS AND THE RAISING OF REVENUE FOR THE FISCAL YEAR BEGINNING JULY 1, 2004” (2004-04-11/O-2.1)
BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill that the Budget Ordinance entitled “An Ordinance Concerning Appropriations and the Raising of Revenue for the Fiscal Year Beginning July 1, 2004” as duly adopted on June 14, 2004 and the same is hereby amended as follows:
