SUBJECT: Amendments to Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances to Reflect the Renaming of Airport Road to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the Renaming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Street to Jackie Robinson Street

The attached ordinance would amend Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances regarding traffic regulations to reflect the renaming of Airport Road to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the renaming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Street to Jackie Robinson Street. Please see Attachment 1 for area maps.
We recommend enactment of the attached ordinance.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
At its December 6, 2004 meeting, the Council approved the renaming of Airport Road to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Airport Road extends from its southern terminus at North Street to its northern terminus at the I-40 ramps. To avoid duplication and to honor Jackie Robinson, at its April 5, 2005 meeting the Council approved renaming of the existing Martin Luther King, Jr. Street to Jackie Robinson Street. Both new street names would be effective May 8, 2005.
The attached ordinance would amend Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances regarding traffic regulations such as speed limits, stop regulations, traffic control at signalized intersections, and parking regulations to properly reflect the renaming of Airport Road to Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and the renaming of Martin Luther King, Jr. Street to Jackie Robinson Street.
MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION
The Manager recommends enactment of the attached ordinance that would amend Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances regarding traffic regulations due to the name changes to Airport Road and Martin Luther King, Jr. Street.

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the Town of Chapel Hill as follows:
Section 1. Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances, “Traffic code.” is hereby amended by replacing “Airport Road” with “Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard” wherever it appears.
Section 2. Chapter 21 of the Town Code of Ordinances, “Traffic code.” is hereby amended by replacing “Martin Luther King, Jr. Street” with “Jackie Robinson Street” wherever it appears.
Section 3. This ordinance shall become effective May 8, 2005.
