SUBJECT:      Response to Request to Restructure Active Living By Design Advisory Committee

The attached resolution would modify the size and composition of the Active Living By Design Advisory Committee.

 

BACKGROUND

 

In 2003 Chapel Hill was awarded an Active Living By Design Grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Grant is being used to fund programs designed to promote active living by residents of Chapel Hill. As part of the requirements of the Active Living By Design Grant the Town Council created the Active Living By Design Advisory Committee on May 10, 2004. The Committee was composed of representatives from organizations associated in some way with public health issue, members of existing Town advisory boards and members of the general public.

 

DISCUSSION

 

Over the course of the past year several of the organizations previously identified as member of the Active Living By Design Advisory Committee have notified the Town that they will not be able to participate on the Committee. At this point six of the 20 members of the Committee have resigned due to their inability to participate on a regular basis. The loss of these members has resulted in difficulty for the Committee to achieve a quorum on a regular basis. Those organizations that have resigned include:

 

 

We concur with the request by the Active Living By Design Committee to reduce the size of the Committee from 20 to 14. With the proposed modification to the Committee membership the following organizations would continue to be represented on the Committee:

 

 

RECOMMENDATION

 

Manager’s Recommendation: That the Council adopt the Resolution revising the organization of the Active Living By Design Committee. The resolution would reduce the number of appointees representing organizations with expertise in public health or community design from 6 to 3. The resolution would also reduce the number of appointees from Chapel Hill organizations with similar interests or expertise from 6 to 3.

 


 

A RESOLUTION REVISING THE STRUCTURE OF THE CHAPEL HILL ACTIVE LIVING BY DESIGN ADVISORY COMMITTEE (2005-06-27/R-10)

 

WHEREAS, the Town Council created the Active Living By Design Advisory Committee to provide support for the Town’s efforts to encourage more a more active lifestyle for Chapel Hill residents; and

 

WHEREAS, the Active Living By Design Committee has requested that the structure of the Committee be revised to reduce the size of the Committee from 20 to 14 members;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOVLED, by the Council that the composition of the Active Living By Design Advisory Committee be revised as follows:

 

 

B.     Composition of the Partnership Advisory Committee:

 

Not to exceed 14 members to be appointed by the Council, including:

 

-     3 representatives of organizations with expertise in public health and community design;

-     3 representatives of Chapel Hill Community Organizations with an interest or expertise in public health and active living;

-     3 representatives from Town Advisory Boards

-     1 representative from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board

-     4 citizens with expertise or interest in public health, community design and active living.
