SUBJECT: Access onto and through Columbia Place

The operations officers of the Fire Department have brought to my attention the problem of access for fire apparatus and emergency vehicles onto and through the Columbia Place neighborhood. This area currently permits parking on both sides of the street and when vehicles are parked in such a manner, access for larger emergency vehicles like fire trucks and ambulances are impeded or totally blocked. The situation appears to be worse at night when most residents are at home. This situation has the potential for preventing or delaying emergency vehicles from getting to a fire or other emergency.

I have personally driven the streets in this neighborhood and find that indeed, emergency response would be potentially disrupted. I recommend that the Town consider restricting on-street parking to one side of the Columbia Place streets. Unrestricted fire apparatus access and operating space in this densely developed neighborhood is critical and time relevant.
