TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager
SUBJECT: Status Report on Police Building Renovation Study
DATE: February 14, 2000
This memorandum describes the next steps we plan to
take in preparing options and recommendations for repairs to the police
building.
BACKGROUND
On January 31 the Council received a report from the
architect under contract to the Town to develop a feasibility study of the
police headquarters facility on Airport Road.
Following the presentation questions were raised about the level of
renovation and repairs necessary to protect the Town’s investment in the
property. Because we were not satisfied
with the level of clarity of the architect’s presentation of his findings, we
recommended that the topic be brought back to the Council tonight to allow the
Town and architect to resolve those issues.
We met with the architect on several occasions
during the past two weeks. After these conversations, we believe it would be
better to pay for the services rendered to date and to sever our relationship
with the architect.
We plan to engage another architect to analyze the
data already collected about the building and to prepare a clear statement of
repairs that are needed most immediately, their projected costs, and options
for other repair work possible within the available funds. We will report back to the Council as soon
as this report is ready.
