SUBJECT:       Response to Request for Information about the Pines Community Center

The purpose of this report is to provide information about the results of inspections conducted at the Pines Community Center facility located at 107 Johnson Street.

The Pines Community Center, Inc. is a private non-profit organization. The Center’s Board of Directors owns the building and governs activities at the facility.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

At the June 12, 2000 meeting the Council asked the staff to obtain information about results of the inspections of the Pines Community Center facility.  The following information is provided for the Council’s consideration.

• On May 23, 2000 a follow-up inspection was performed by the Town Inspections Department at the Pines Community Center facility.  The building was found to be in compliance with the Chapel Hill Minimum Housing Code. 

• We contacted the Orange County Health Department regarding this matter (please see Attachment 1). The Health Department staff investigated the facility on October 26, 1999  (please see Attachment 2).  The results of the investigation were forwarded to the N.C. Division of Child Development that provides regulatory guidance for facilities providing childcare. 

• A letter from the Knolls Development Association discusses the current use of the Community Center (please see Attachment 3).

We will forward any additional information to the Council.
