AGENDA #5c

MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Mayor and Town Council

FROM:            W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

SUBJECT:       Information Report: Landscape Issues related to the Lower Booker Creek Greenway, Phase II Project

DATE:             June 26, 2000

On June 12, 2000, the Council approved the bid of R & G Construction Company in the amount of $373,422 for construction of the Lower Booker Creek Trail. The trail will be a 10-foot wide concrete path that will extend for about 4,300 feet from Booker Creek Road to East Franklin Street.

At that time, the Council directed the Manager to re-examine the costs and benefits associated with landscaping the current Phase I Trail and eliminate any plantings that were purely decorative. The landscape alternative for the Daley Road and Tadley Drive trailheads was expected to cost $10,018 if installed as originally designed.

We have determined that a total of 33 trees and shrubs, with a value of $4,178, have little value as screening plants. These plantings were intended to beautify the Tadley Drive and Daley Road trailheads.

We will revise the Zoning Compliance Permit for the project to reflect the elimination of these 33 plants. We will then process a change order to give the Town a credit in the amount of $4,178.

We expect the remainder of the plants to be installed in November 2000.
