AGENDA# 4d
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor and Town Council
FROM: W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager
SUBJECT: Petition for 35 MPH Speed Limit on Barbee Chapel Road
DATE: August 28, 2000
The attached ordinance would reduce the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on Barbee Chapel Road within the Chapel Hill Town limits south of NC 54. Please see the attached map.
We have received a request from several residents on Barbee Chapel Road to reduce the existing 45 mph speed limit to 35 mph within the Town’s jurisdiction south of NC 54. Please see the attached petition.
Barbee Chapel Road is a two-lane State roadway which extends south from N.C.54 near the Durham County line. Approximately ¾ mile of Barbee Chapel Road south of N.C.54 is presently within the Chapel Hill Town limits.
We think the requested speed limit reduction is reasonable based on the 35 mph speed limits posted on similar roads throughout Chapel Hill.
If the Council adopts the attached ordinance, we will forward a copy to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for its concurrence. Signs would then be replaced.
That the Council adopt the attached ordinance reducing the speed limit from 45 mph to 35 mph on Barbee Chapel Road within the town limits south of NC 54.
