TO: Mayor
and Town Council
FROM: Council Members Bateman and Wiggins
SUBJECT: Inventory of Town’s Apprenticeship
Opportunities
DATE: March
5, 2001
Over the course of the last two years, including the recent budget work sessions, the Council has discussed the possibility of recruiting high school students to provide assistance to some of our Town staff. We believe that area high school students could serve a role in various Town offices that would:
§ provide the students with work experience;
§ develop interest among students in careers that exist in Town government;
§ develop a pool of local applicants for hire;
§ provide staff with needed support, particularly during what could be a tight budget year;
§ increase the number of citizens who live in Chapel Hill who work in Chapel Hill.
We request that the Manager conduct a study of the apprenticeship needs and opportunities in all Town departments, with a goal of developing a high school apprenticeship program for the Town.
