AGENDA #11a(2)

MEMORANDUM

TO:                  Mayor and Town Council

FROM:            Council Member Pat Evans

SUBJECT:       Response to Petition of June 11, 2001

DATE:             October 10, 2001

On June 11, 2001, the Council received and referred a petition which asked that the Council structure advisory boards to more closely represent the diversity of the Town Council (Attachment 1).  At that time, the petition was referred to the staff and to advisory boards for comment (Attachment 2).

At the Council’s August 27th meeting, I suggested that the Council not move forward with this petition, which was accepted by the consensus of the Council  (Attachment 3).  I have since been advised by the staff that my suggestion did not reverse the June 11th referral to advisory boards.

I believe that if advisory boards would like to offer suggestions regarding the appointment process from time to time, and many have, the Council would be happy to consider them.  I do not believe it is necessary to undertake such a review process as suggested in the petition.

I request that the Council clarify its position and reverse the motion made on June 11, and that no further consideration be made at this time to the appointment process for boards and commissions.
