BUDGET WORKING PAPER

TO:                  W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

FROM:            Bruce Heflin, Public Works Director

SUBJECT:       Notice of Dead End and No Outlet Streets

DATE:             May 15, 2002

At the budget work session on April 24, 2002, a Council member requested that we find better ways to provide notice of dead end and/or no outlet streets.

DISCUSSION

Our present practice is installation of standard signs at entrances to dead end and no outlet streets. These signs indicate the status of such streets, using black lettering on yellow background. They are diamond shaped signs of approximately 30” x 30” measurement.

In addition to the standard signing noted above, we propose to start including a decal on new street name signs for dead end and no outlet streets.  In a “no outlet” neighborhood, the decal on the street name sign and the standard “No Outlet” sign would be placed at the entrance to the neighborhood.  We would not place additional decals on the interior street name signs since the motorist already would have been notified of the no outlet situation at the entrance.  It would be difficult to retrofit most of the existing signs with the full decal, so we would add the decal when the street name sign needs to be replaced and a longer blank can be used.  On very short dead end streets, the decal on the street name sign may be sufficient; avoiding the larger No Outlet signs would have the added benefit of minimizing sign clutter.
