AGENDA #3a(3)
Petition Sent Via E-mail:
October 3, 2002
I would like to bring to your attention the people who are hurt most by library fines--moms.
Moms with two or more children rountinely and reliably check out large numbers of children's books. I myself have three children and easily check out 30 books each visit. Moms are also the most preoccupied animals on the planet making it inevitable to have overdue books.
By the time the library computer calls, "Someone at this residence may have a book that is overdue....," dear ol' mom owes $18. (30 books x .20 x 3 days)
Sure, moms develop all types of systems to stay organized
--trying to edge the due date into the corner of an overfilled refrigerator calendar, leaving the library books on the family room floor instead of tucked away on a bookshelf.
Sure, moms are trying to model for their children how to be responsible, and we all want to be responsible. However, no one is waiting in line to get Rabbit's Birthday Kite or Keep Your Socks On, Albert!
Would you please consider a lower fine per book just for children's books? Half-priced fines would be easy to implement. The library calls "Someone at this residence...," and I'll owe $9 instead of $18!
Thank you,
Diane Davis
