PRELIMINARY DESIGN REVIEW OF THE ARTS COMMON PLAN

The Campus Master Plan suggests a strategy for the development of the area on North campus indicated in Precinct II, bounded to the north by Franklin Street, to the west by South Columbia, to the south by Cameron Avenue, and on the east by McCorkle Place extending east on Cameron to include Gerard and Old Smith Hall (Playmakers).  The goal of the Arts Common Plan is to provide a working document that will serve as a guide for future development of this part of campus.

The Arts Common is envisioned as the central location for a mix of public and academic facilities for the fine and performing arts.  The planning process involved programming with all the users and occupants of this part of campus to make a community of related facilities organized around new open spaces to promote the arts at Carolina.

The design team was asked to generate a conceptual plan to include new building sites, identification of buildings to be demolished, and clarification of existing buildings to remain; development of the exterior environment; and a proposal for preliminary phasing and costs estimates for different projects.

The plan includes a new 282 car underground parking deck for visitors, a new building and the renovation of Smith Hall for the Music Department, renovation of the original Carnegie Library part of Hill Hall and an addition to accommodate a combined Art and Music Library, renovation of front part of Swain and two new buildings for offices, classrooms and an Auditorium, interior renovations to Hanes Art Center, additions to the Ackland Art Museum, proposals for the renovations/restorations of Gerrard Hall and Old Playmakers (Smith Hall), and proposals for the open space development of the Arts Common Area.

The Chancellor’s Buildings and Grounds Committee reviewed this design at the September, 2002 meeting.   The project has been reviewed by Adam Gross.
