FROM:            W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

SUBJECT:       Retirement of Two Police Dogs and a Donation to Replace One

DATE:             October 21, 2002

This evening the Kiwanis Club of Orange County will present a donation to the Town Council for the Chapel Hill Police Department Canine program, and we will recognize two retiring canines.

BACKGROUND

Within the last six months the Police Department has retired two of our four police dogs due to the age of the dogs.  The purchase of dogs for the program has been funded totally by donations from citizens, local businesses, and other organizations such as the Kiwanis Club of Orange County.  One of the two retiring dogs has already been replaced.  The Kiwanis Club of Orange County held a barbeque supper September 21, 2002, to raise funds to purchase and train a replacement for the Department’s other retiring police dog.

PRESENTATION

Mr. Mark Brown, President of the Kiwanis Club, will present a $4000 donation to the Town Council to be used for the purchase and training of a police dog for the Chapel Hill Police Department Canine program.

RECOGNITION

The two canines, who are being recognized for their long and faithful service to the Chapel Hill Police Department’s Canine Program, are:

Kopper, a German Shepherd born in the Netherlands in 1991, who served the Town for eight years, and;

Xaro, also a German Shepherd from the Netherlands born in 1993, who served the town seven years.

The retired dogs will live with their handlers to allow the dogs to live out their retirement years in comfort.
