AGENDA #5e

MEMORANDUM

TO:                 Mayor and Town Council

FROM :           W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager

SUBJECT:       Response to a Petition from Steinway Gallery Requesting Installation of a “Side Road” Sign on Fordham Boulevard

DATE:             January 27, 2003

This report responds to a petition from Mr. Bill Steinway of Steinway Gallery requesting installation of a “side road” sign on northbound Fordham Boulevard prior to Bypass Lane.  Attachment #1 is a copy of the petition.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

At its November 11, 2002 meeting, the Town Council received a petition from Mr. Steinway of Steinway Gallery requesting the installation of a “side road” sign on northbound Fordham Boulevard prior to Bypass Lane.  Bypass Lane serves as a short frontage lane along Fordham Boulevard at this location. Please see the area map provided in Attachment #2.

An example of the requested sign is included on page five of the attached petition.  Mr. Steinway requested installation of a sign because the sight distance to and from the entrance to Bypass Lane is partially obscured by landscaping adjacent to Fordham Boulevard and south of the entrance drive.  We field reviewed this location and agree that the requested sign would increase Fordham Boulevard drivers’ awareness of the entrance to Bypass Lane.

This intersection is on the State roadway system, and therefore we requested that the North Carolina Department of Transportation consider installation of the sign requested by Mr. Steinway.  State staff reviewed the intersection, and agreed to install the requested sign within the next sixty days.
