RE:                   PETITION

DATE:             February 24, 2003

The Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, in partnership with the Downtown Commission, is planning a one day arts festival, Arts ‘Round Town, on Saturday, April 5, 2003.  Festival hours will be from 11am to 7pm.  Downtown businesses will feature artists’ works in their stores and storefronts.  Sculptors will display their works on McCorkle Place and performing artists will entertain the public with their music up and down Franklin Street.  Dancers, sculptors, painters, poets, actors, photographers, storytellers, and musicians will transform the area into a one day arts celebration.

The Public Arts Commission is petitioning the Council to allow artists to place appropriately scaled and properly anchored three-dimensional artworks in some of the empty planter boxes on Franklin Street.  Festival planners feel these spaces could be utilized by artists to enhance and enliven the streetscape for the festival event.  The artworks would be on display for one day only, Saturday, April 5.

The Public Arts Commission is also petitioning the Council to allow the participating visual artists to sell their artworks during the Festival event on Saturday, April 5, 2003.  Many more visual artists will participate in this event if they are allowed to sell their artworks.

Thank you.
