AGENDA #4e
BUDGET WORKING PAPER
TO: W. Calvin Horton, Town Manager
FROM: Kathryn Spatz, Parks and Recreation Director
SUBJECT: Space Required for Pottery and Other Fine Art Programs
DATE: April 2, 2003
This memorandum is in response to a Council member’s question concerning the space for the existing pottery program and space required for additional fine arts activities.
The pottery studio at the Lincoln Center currently used extensively by the Parks and Recreation Department is approximately 2,800 square feet, with 2,600 used as studio space and 200 square feet needed for storage and kiln space. One tremendous benefit of the existing space is its abundance of natural light from large windows and its high ceilings (13.5 feet). We believe that these features make the Lincoln studio particularly conducive to creative activities such as pottery.
We believe that the ideal space for a community-based pottery and other fine art program is approximately 3,000 square feet, including storage space. This is consistent with the findings of the Homestead Park Aquatic/Community Center Advisory Committee which studied the issue and sought community input prior to presenting its recommendations to the Council in 2000.
