DISCUSSION

The Government Finance Officers Association has announced that the 2002-2003 Annual Budget has been awarded the Government Finance Officers’ Distinguished Budget Award for the Town’s 2002-2003 Annual Budget.  Town staff from all departments worked together to make major changes in the presentation, format and content of the Town’s budget information in order to meet the high standards of the Distinguished Budget Award.  The reviewers deemed the Budget “distinguished” for its service as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.  The reviewers commented positively on many elements of the Budget, but remarked specially on its understandability and usability.

The Government Finance Officers’ Association has also announced that the Town of Chapel Hill’s 2001-2002 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Town of Chapel Hill qualifies for a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.  The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting.  With this award, the Town has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for 18 consecutive years.

The Town is proud of its consistently high standards for budget and accounting presentations.  Only 6% of North Carolina’s 627 governmental units received both the Certificate of Achievement and the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.
