SUBJECT: Comparison of Police Department Staffing Levels

The purpose of this memorandum is to respond to a request for information from a Council member at the April 2 budget work session regarding the number of police officers in neighboring departments.
Attached to this memorandum is a set of tables that provide the following information:
The tables compare Chapel Hill staffing levels to nine other area communities and police departments. The crime numbers reflected in the tables are Part 1 crimes (murder, rape, robbery, larceny and aggravated assault) from calendar year 2001, the last full year of data collected and published by the state. For the purposes of accurate comparisons, the numbers of officers and population figures listed in the tables are also 2001 figures.
