AGENDA #1a

3RD ANNUAL GREENWAYS AND OPEN SPACE AWARDS

JUNE 8, 2003

PRE-AWARD RECEPTION AT 6:30 PM

The Greenways Commission started the awards program in 2001 as a way of honoring those who have made contributions toward preserving open space and building trails in Chapel Hill. This year awards will be given in three categories:

Vision Award – Recipients of this award have demonstrated leadership, vision, and commitment over a period of time with significant positive impact to the Greenways and/or Open Space programs of the Town.

Honor Award – Responsible for a high impact initiative that created a clearly visible improvement in or addition to the Greenways and/or Open Space programs.

Citizen’s Award – Contributed to the creation, improvement, or preservation of the Greenways and/or Open Space programs.

Audrey Booth - Vision Award

Ms. Booth aided (and continues to aid) the Town’s efforts to preserve open space and build trails in many ways. In addition to her 6 years with the Town’s Greenways Commission she has volunteered to assist with various land acquisition efforts including the successful acquisition of the Leon Carroll tract and other on-going efforts. She also spent considerable time and energy working with other groups such as the Triangle Land Conservancy and the New Hope Corridor Master Plan Committee. Her fundraising work with the Triangle Land Conservancy was particularly notable since it helped that organization secure the nearby 296 acre Johnston Mill Tract on New Hope Creek.

Duke Energy - Honor Award

Duke Energy graciously donated 2 key acres of property adjacent to Merritt Pasture, Morgan Creek, and 15-501. This property is key to the Town’s efforts to eventually provide public access to the Merritt Pasture.

Students in the UNC Department of City and Regional Planning - Citizen Award

Students of the program, in a self-initiated effort, built a segment of the Pritchard Park Trail in the spring of 2003. The trail will be officially opened this year.

Michael Martin - Citizen Award

Mr. Martin built a segment of the Dry Creek Trail including an attractive bridge. The trail section should be officially opened in 2003.

Austin Painter - Citizen Award

Mr. Painter built a segment of the mile long Pritchard Park Nature Trail. The trail section should be officially dedicated this year.

Sharna Tolfree - Citizen Award

Ms. Tolfree spent almost a week of effort working on the Pritchard Park Trail. She made improvements and completed the last segment. The trail section should be officially dedicated this year.
