2. Uninscribed Fieldstones
Many uninscribed fieldstones, erected by families who did not have the money to purchase a gravestone, mark the graves of unknown individuals in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
Such markers, salvaged from the rocky fields of the area, are one of the most common types of gravemarkers in the North Carolina piedmont during the antebellum period. The dates of these markers are unknown, but they probably represent burials throughout the nineteenth century.
