SUBJECT:      Budget Amendment for Acceptance of Alcoholic Beverage Control Grant Funds

PURPOSE

 

The attached resolution and budget ordinance amendment would authorize the acceptance of FY2007-2008 and FY2008-2009 Orange County ABC Board funds in the amount of $38,686 to enhance the Police Department’s alcohol education and enforcement efforts.

 

BACKGROUND

 

ABC Grant funds are used to support the Police Department’s ABC law enforcement efforts.  Officers use the funds to attend training in identifying and preventing alcohol related crimes, to purchase dedicated computer equipment needed to store alcohol offense case data and to provide audio/visual aids for community training as well as departmental in-service training.  In addition, recording and surveillance equipment would also be purchased for use while conducting alcohol compliance and enforcement operations.  Funds may also be used for overtime expenses for additional officers during special saturation patrols and other alcohol enforcement operations.

 

DISCUSSION

 

In July 2007, and again in June 2008, the Orange County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board notified the Police Department that the Department’s request for funds had been approved. These amounts totaling $38,686 included $10,140 for FY2007-08 and $28,546 for FY2008-09.

 

RECOMMENDATION

 

We recommend that the Council adopt the attached resolution and enact the budget ordinance amendment authorizing the acceptance of the Orange County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board funds.
