SUBJECT: Acceptance of FY2008-2009 COPS Law Enforcement Technology Grant Funds

Adoption of the attached resolution would authorize the acceptance of FY2008-2009 Department of Justice COPS Law Enforcement Technology grant funds in the amount of $116,913 to support the Police Department’s technology programs.
BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION
In October 2008, the Department of Justice notified the Police Department that the Department’s request for funds had been approved in the amount of $116,913. These funds will be used to support the Police Department’s efforts to purchase new and updated equipment that would enhance the department’s technology.
The Police Department continues to increase its technology capabilities in several areas. As new laws and regulations have been passed, the department must meet basic requirements pertaining to the evidentiary process to include; collection, processing, and storage of evidence. The department has sought grant funds to assist in addressing technological deficiencies in these areas. These funds will assist the department in meeting these needs by enabling the department to purchase new equipment.
RECOMMENDATION
We recommend that the Council adopt the attached resolution authorizing the acceptance of the COPS Law Enforcement Technology grant funds, and that Council enact the attached budget ordinance amendment appropriating the PSN grant funds.
